Recommended sweep cycle is :- Smokeless coal-Once a year :- Wood-twice a year if used all year round: ie. for heating/hot water :- Bitumous Coal-Twice a year.
Regular sweeping of your chimney will prevent blockages & a dangerous build up of soot, preventing chimney fires & allowing deadly combustion gases to escape without hindrance through the chimney/flue(& also preserve the stove liner guarantee).
Clean chimneys will help your fuel burn more efficiently thus saving you money & helping to protect our environment.
Fire wood can be tested for free to make sure it is seasoned & dry along with a sweep.
I would recommend anyone that uses an open fire or stove to buy a moisture meter so you can test your own wood (fuel) before burning it in your appliance, ideally it should be <20% moisture content, the fuel will then burn better giving out more heat & send less particulates into the atmosphere & will negate the possibility of tar/creosote building up in your chimney/flue.
Also with a stove, if the glass is fogging up more often & you are having to clean it regularly then more than likely the fuel is not being burnt hot enough & the vents need to be opened more.
Having your chimney swept at least once a year will pick up any potential issues with inefficient burning of fuels.
